So you have decided you want to start your own company, good for you, it is rewarding but also life sucking haha. I can not tell you how many hours up until this point I have put into Samurai Games and with working a full time job this is not an easy task at all.
Creating a company name seems simple enough, you think oh yeah I have some great ideas already. Then it dawns on you that they are already taken, damn back to square one. The first step is you need to research if the company name is taken. Now I am basing this on a UK company because I am from the UK. You need to go to here and search to see if the company is taken.
If the company names you had lined up are taken you are back to square one, if not go you! That is great and you have saved a number of hours. We went through around 20 names before we settled on Samurai Games. The first few we really liked were taken and this meant going back and forth with new ideas.
How do you create a company name? Well what we did was create some lists of words we liked and tried to see if we could create a company name with them. This can be a fun way of picking a name and you can turn it into a game.
This did not work for us because all the words we liked just did not seem to work for a boardgame company name. This left us lost in the woods and we did find ourselves just randomly trying company names and that was a bad idea.
In the end we found inspiration from going through some old illustration work I had created a long time ago on my computer and we found the Samurai mask. This led us to creating the name Samurai Games UK, We did try some others like Samurai UK and even Samurai UK Games. In the end we thought that Samurai Games UK had a nice sound to it and it worked well with the Illustration I had.
This led to us merging the two together and creating the logo that we use today! This worked for us, this does not mean it will work for you but I hope it does. It is all about creating a name you like and works for the company.
Now I could not give you how many hours we spent creating the name but I think it must have took us around 2 weeks to decide on one! That is a long time and I hope you find a name you like quicker but do not rush it. Make sure you are happy with the name you create because at the end of the day you will be using it all the time!
