Postage is a nightmare, since Covid-19 and Brexit the cost to post items across the world seems to have tripled!
Now, the first stage is to break down each tier and work out the size of the item or items. We then need to find boxes and bubble wrap for the item to make sure we can post them safely.
We then to work out the cost for the bubble wrap and box so we can create the right postage cost for the item. We do not want to be advertising a lower cost then it actually costs to post this item.
Now let us say the box costs us £1 each and the bubble wrap costs us £0.50 per box. The total there is £1.50 and we need to add this on to the cost we receive from the royal mail. Now there are cheaper options in the UK to post with but I have had nothing but issues using them in the past and I refuse to use them again.
We now need to work out the weight of the item, the weight of the box and the weight of the bubble wrap.
Game = 132 grams round this up to 135g
Box = 198 grams round this up to 200g
Bubble wrap = 1 gram round this up to 5g
We have a total of 340g we once again round this up, I would go to 400g to play it safe, best to be over and not under.
We can now use the royal mail price finder to see how much a small parcel weighing 400g would cost to post to the UK. Now if the total price of the items is £20 or under we can just use 1st or 2nd class. I am just going to say this costs £4.
We need to add the £4 to the £1.50 to post the item and because Kickstarter only rounds up we need to put this as £6 postage to the UK. This is the cost we can not change this we need to pay that to post the item.
If the game cost more we can select postage methods that cost £50 or under and £250 or under, these are the only options we have. The item's value needs to be covered in the postage in case it does go missing or gets damaged in transit.
We then need to work out the costs for different countries, we can not do this for every country as this will take forever but you can do the big countries;
Europe will cover from Portugal to Russia
China
New Zealand
Australia
USA
Canda
Then pick a random island for the rest of the world.
Once you do this you for all the tiers and items make sure you enter the correct postage cost for each country you check. Turns out at the moment a lot are the same price which made it easier to put on Kickstarter.
Also, make sure people are aware of the postage time. Royal mail at the moment is saying that international postage can take from 2 to 12 weeks! This is not your fault and cannot be helped, post this on the campaign and let your backers know.
